October 2000 A
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Six months have passed since we celebrated the successes of last season. As I write, we are only days away from the start of a new season and I believe we have every reason to be confident that we will continue to enjoy success. The Management Committee has been working hard since June to ensure that we are ready to consolidate and improve on what we have achieved over the last two years and I thank them for their efforts. In Ian Wallace, we have one of the most qualified and respected coaches in the State. We have also appointed high calibre people as Captains, Managers and Practice Coordinators. While
we have had to attend to a thousand and one operational details, the Management
Committee also recognises the importance of planning for the future. To this end
we have commenced the process of revising the Club’s Development Plan that was
established two years ago. Although it is likely to be December/January before
the total plan is finalised, we have agreed on Our
Vision. Copies of this document will soon be displayed in the clubrooms. I
ask you all to take the time to read and understand this because it describes
the kind of club we want Brighton to be and gives us all a common focus. Having
worked so hard to regain entry to the Premier Grade, it is imperative that we
stay there. Unfortunately, employment opportunities away from Adelaide mean that
Ryan Dale and Marcus Dale, our opening pair from last year, will not be with us.
Both Ryan and Marcus have been at Brighton since they were juniors and they will
be missed, not only as players but also as workers and leaders in the Club. We
wish them every success – they will always be welcome at Brighton. On the
positive side, we have been successful in recruiting some new players who are
proven in Premier Grade and several of our fringe A grade players from last year
have the potential to succeed at this level. I am confident that we will be
competitive. To
emphasise our focus on juniors we have this year strengthened the Junior
Development Committee and given it greater autonomy to manage all aspects of our
junior program that is making such a valuable contribution to our community. Led
by John Parker, this Committee has already put in an enormous amount of work.
Our Club encourages family involvement so I ask all parents of juniors to have a
chat to their son’s Team Manager or to John to see what they can do to support
the Club’s junior program. We
will again be fielding 10 teams (5 senior, 5 junior) making us one of the
biggest cricket clubs in the State. The cost of running a turf cricket club of
this size is considerable. This season we are budgeting for expenditure of $
42,000. In order to keep player subscriptions down to reasonable levels, it is
critical that we maximise revenue gained through sponsorship, fundraising and
grants. Craig Wallace (with assistance from Sports & Social Club Manager,
Daryl Lewis) has been extremely successful during the off season in gaining new
sponsorship and retaining sponsorship from last year. I thank all those
companies and individuals for your support. The Club will be making a special
effort during the season to recognise your support and to ensure that you get a
worthwhile return on your investment in the Brighton Cricket Club. Tom
Hogan and his band of hand-picked advisers have been busy establishing a program
of social events. The first of these is a Wine & Beer Tasting Night on
Saturday 28 October. This has always been a great function in the past and I am
sure that this year will be no exception. Organise your family and friends to
come along and get the season off to a flying start. Finally, I extend a
warm Bomber welcome to all new players, particularly Martin Roberts and Tim
George from the Llandudno Cricket Club in Wales. (Thank you to Stenia Smith and
Paul and Annie Dale for helping with accommodation). Good
luck to you all. Neil Smith COMMENTS FROM THE COACH’S BENCH Well season 200/1 is nearly upon us and we are eagerly
awaiting the first game. Whilst
season 1999/2000 was a very successful one as far as the whole club was
concerned that is now past and we must focus on season 2000/1. The challenge ahead for the club is to stabilize a
position in Premier League this season and for all other teams be competitive in
their various grades. There is an
influx of Juniors coming up to Senior ranks this year and I wish Matthew Prior,
Brad Campbell, Alan Hutchinson, Lachlan Millard, Mathew Mostak the best of luck
in their first season of Senior Cricket. A warm welcome is extended to the following players: Kevin Payne Tim Munro Anthony Kolenberg Mathew Burton Jason Bryan Barrett Bloxham Neville Clark Luke Davey Danny Donhardt Gerard Harrison Rick McDonald Robert Redding Robert Superina Bryce Watson Garry Williams As you can see we have 15 new players this year and another 5 players coming up from the junior competition, which is going to make things very competitive for team selection. My advice is that if you wish to progress then not only is attendance at training a necessity it is a matter of quality training and using that time to the best possible advantage. I wish all players an enjoyable and successful season. Ian Wallace Club Coach
