President's report Coach's report Junior Development report With 3 rounds to go all of our teams continue to perform admirably, with many fine individual performances being the catalyst for these results. If we all continue to remain focused I am sure the club will reap the rewards it deserves from a number of successes. Although the club’s income has been reduced through change in the management of the BS & SC we are working hard to continue to remain viably sound. Your support is required - attendance at social functions, Thursday & Saturday nights and the major lottery being the most important. Your areas of disappointment have been a few outstanding subs and a couple of incidents of misconduct by some individuals. Appropriate action was taken to reinforce that any misconduct will not be tolerated. On a lighter note the following activities will take place while there are also a few items of merchandise available for sale. * Major lottery * Foxtel - inc Racing Channel * Junior Presentations (Sundays) * Double Wicket - Thursday 24th Feb * Club Polo Shirts - $30 * M & M chocolates - $3 per box * Junior Training Shorts - $15 * Wide brimmed GC Hats - $10 * Quiz Night - Saturday 26th Feb - BOOK EARLY * Past Players Night - Friday 10th March Guest Speaker Phil Carman While there have been many fine milestones completed this year the achievements of C Moyle, D Lewis, & R Dopson in completing 300 games for the club is outstanding. Congratulations and well done. The club again conducted a junior coaching clinic that was coordinated by our coach Ian Wallace with more than 30 boys attending. My thanks to Ian, Bevan, Smithy, Chippy, Michael and Noel Young for their assistance with both this and the HAVE A GO CLINICS that are currently ongoing. Finally, our appreciation to our sponsors who continue to support our efforts in achieving our goal f becoming the most respected and successful club in the ATCA. IAN BARNES Back to top
After the completion of Round Nine the 'A' Grade side is sitting in second position on the ladder undefeated. With three rounds to play, we play the top side, the third side and a team that is in the middle of the table. We could not have a better run into the finals with the draw as it is. We played very good cricket to dispose of Pulteney OS but then failed with the bat against the lowly placed Modbury team. We need to ensure that we work the ball around more and bat out the allocated 80 overs. The 'B' Grade boys are going along nicely in top position and I would be disappointed if they do not finish on top of the table. Captain Boo Boo Hayes led from the front in making 125 not out against AHOS last round. Let this be an example to any other player that makes 100, you start again once you reach 100 and never ever throw your wicket away. Greg Muehlberg is bowling exceptionally well and is keeping pressure on the 'A' Grade bowlers to perform. Good to see Sam Chen get amongst the runs with 59 not out in the last round. Darryl Lewis’ boys have now got the job in front of them to make the four. They need to win the last three games to ensure that they gain a finals birth. Good luck boys. Billy Dand’s boys come up against Woodville Rechabites this round in a match will determine who will be the top of the ladder at the end of the minor round. The One-Day boys’ performance has slipped a little and they will need to become more stable in playing personnel in the run to the finals. I feel the playing personnel is there and we need to get them on the field together and playing well. Once again I raise the question of discipline on the field. Information coming to me has Brighton as one of the worst clubs when it comes to player behaviour and disputing umpiring decisions. This is most disappointing for the club to be regarded in this light. We have to do something about it so I would advise all players not to overstep the line in relation to player behaviour and disputing umpiring decisions. IAN WALLACE Back to top As we approach the business end of the season junior cricket at Brighton continues to thrive. Both U/17 sides seem certain to contest final series. In the U/15 competition one Brighton side will play finals cricket with the other also remaining ultra competitive. The U/13 side also continue to produce good results. All sides have developed some outstanding players this season which can only auger well for the club’s future. Have a Go cricket sessions continue on Saturday mornings with success. I’d like to thank senior players, Mark LeCornu, Peter Mosley, Craig Wallace and Bevan Constable for their continued assistance at these sessions. The Club also ran a vacational Clinic during the School holidays co-ordinated by Ian Wallace which proved a success for the Club both financially and in our quest to become the leading venue for junior cricket in the area. I would like to wish all junior sides participating in the finals every success and I know you will proudly represent the Brighton Cricket club. I would like to leave you with a quote from Steve Waugh about how he deals with the increased pressure in big games such as finals. I think his mental approach is excellent and gives us all food for thought. “I do not get any more nervous when the big occasion beckons, it just sharpens my focus. It is like an opportunity you’ve been waiting for, you have the chance to do something really special. You just have to give it your best shot and muster as much courage as you can give it or you can walk away and say it’s too tough and leave it to someone else.” Steve Waugh. All the best, Steve Smith Back to top |
