President's Report

The Brighton Cricket Club can be reasonably satisfied with what we have achieved to this point in the season.

In the last edition of Bomber News I mentioned that the Management Committee was in the process of finalising a Development Plan for 2000/2001. The Plan has been completed and posted on notice boards in the Clubrooms. In addition, copies are being distributed with this edition of Bomber News. I ask that you make some time to read the Plan because it describes the kind of club we want Brighton to be and the specific things we aim to achieve during 2000/2001. The Management Committee will be reviewing progress towards achievement of these objectives at its next meeting on 8 January.

By now most of you would know that we have already achieved one of our objectives of developing a web site. This has been done through the skill and hard work of David Milburn who also supports the Club by producing this newsletter. I believe that the web site will not only provide interest and information for our members, but will also promote the Club to a wider audience and provide an opportunity for our sponsors to promote their businesses. We hope to soon have our own web site name, but at the moment it can be accessed on

The Have-A-Go Clinics on Friday nights have been extremely successful and I thank Stephen Smith, John Parker and other senior players who have given their time to introduce the game of cricket to more than thirty boys and girls.

I am concerned as all of you are with the poor state of the net facilities. Please be assured that the Management Committee is dealing with this as a priority. We are currently getting some expert advice about what to do both in the short and long term and we will act quickly on the basis of that advice.

On the playing side, all of our teams have been competitive. It is critical that we continue to work hard on and off the field as we come to the business end of the season.

I wish all of you and your families a safe and happy Xmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Coach's report

With nearly half the season gone its now time for all teams to consolidate.

Each team has a good chance of participating in the finals, provided the workload is maintained at an acceptable level. With the majority of excessplayers gone the sides are settling down and the competition for places isquite intense.

The "A" grade side failed to capitalize on a splendid knock of 126 by skipper John Rankin and with the score 5 for 205 we lost the last 5 wickets for 1 run to be dismissed for 206. Walkerville replied with 6/260 and I am sure that losing to the bottom side will and should be hurting those players responsible for the defeat. The next game against Woodville Rechabites is a must win game for us and I am sure you will see a different side in action this Saturday.

The "B" grade boys bounced back with a good win again Richmond/Clarence Park, which was an even effort from all concerned.

The "C" and "D" grade sides also had significant victories and are well in contention for the final race.

The One Dayers have cleared their way up the table and are now in fourth spot on the ladder after a slow start to the season.

I wish to take this opportunity to wish all players and officials of the Club a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2001.

N.B. Players, with the warm weather upon us do not forget to put your swimming gear in your cricket bag, as you will require it in the future.

Junior's report

Junior cricket is progressing quite well this season.

Chris Hibbert’s U17 side is in second position having won the last three games outright.

Barry Prior’s U17 side is struggling but I am sure that they will bounce back after the break.

Rob Stone’s U15 side is sitting in top position and performing nicely at the moment.

Greg Tresize’s U15 are mid table and have put together some very sound performances in this developing side.

Ken Mosley’s U13 are playing well. This side is in very capable hands for the future development of our club.

Cricket Overseas in 2000

The Editor has asked me to briefly outline my experiences playing cricket in the UK last winter.

Through some friends at West Torrens, I made contact with a player agent in Melbourne at this time last year. With his help I received an offer to be the overseas player for the Llandudno Cricket Club in the North Wales Cricket League.

The Llandudno Club pays for my travel and accommodation expenses, finds me a job and compensates me for an on-field performance and coaching. In return I was expected to play in all Saturday league games and Sunday fixtures. I was also required to run and coach at senior practices and coach the club’s U11, U13 and U15 sides. It is basically playing and coaching seven days a week.

I also sat in on selection and tried to instil discipline and professionalism as much as possible. It is about C Grade Turf standard overall but it is very competitive cricket at all times.

POSITIVES:

Getting paid for doing what you love
Seeing parts of the world you normally would not see
Making some good friends
Improving cricketing skills by playing all the time and under different conditions and dealing with the pressure of being the “overseas” player.

NEGATIVES

Playing, coaching and training every week of the year can be a grind (you can get sick of cricket)
Being the “overseas” player means you are expected to perform every week and win every game

All in all, it was a valuable and worthwhile experience that I feel has made me a better person and a better cricketer and coach.

As an end note I would like to thank Bevan constable, Adam Smith, Mark le Cornu, Jeremy Astill and Craig Wallace for their assistance in running the “Have-a -Go” cricket on Friday evenings at the Club. The program, as always, has been popular and successful.

Merry Christmas

Steve Smith
